It was a whirlwind of a night, but in less than seven hours, we raised about $55,000 for #Sandy relief efforts, thanks to a city of concerned and generous people.
As we set up shop at KSDK-TV and KMOV-TV— both stations were SO hospitable and graciously allowed us to have phone banks during their newscasts. Volunteers from Ameren, Enterprise and Monsanto–as well as our Board Chairman Dick Clark–and others showed up, ready to man the phones and take donations. Everyone was so friendly and ready to serve. Plus, it was a bonus to have our dinners provided by our great friends at Hardee’s. Also, Kathy Gardner from the United Way of Greater St. Louis stopped in, and we were able to show our appreciation for the great support they have shown us during this disaster.
The phones rang and rang throughout the evening as people from all over the St. Louis region called in to give. Perhaps the most poignant statement was made by our CEO, Cindy Erickson. “Some may give $100 or $500, and others may give just $5…but that five dollars may be someone’s last, and for that reason, their donation is just as important as anyone else’s,” she said. Every large or small effort from last night will make a BIG impact in the lives of those on the East Coast.
So, thank you to EVERYONE who contributed to last night’s efforts — our mission was truly exemplified: “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.”
